Steels produced by powder metallurgy (e.g., SG2) are also used here. The number of damask layers is of minor importance here. It can also only be one at a time, as is the case with 3-layer steel. The effect remains the same. However, the aesthetics of a 62-ply nickel damask, for example, is unsurpassed. The material transitions are reflected in light, wavy lines along the blade, and make the knife appear unequal.
How can you recognize a real damask knife?
Damask is very popular, and reasonable prices can be achieved with it. Of course, this also calls for low-cost providers.
- In most cases, however, only the beautiful appearance of the material is copied here. The waves or torsion patterns are simply applied graphically. It has nothing to do with Damascus steel. Unfortunately, this is often only recognized after it has been used. The patterns peel off after a while. When sharpening or polishing the blade, it becomes clear even faster.
- Real damask can also be felt in most cases. Very slight bumps appear at the material transitions. If you look very closely, you can also see the layers on the back of the knife. With highly polished blades, however, this is difficult to see or feel.
- The shape of the blade is also an important quality indicator. Forged blades taper from top to bottom. Cheap blades are usually just punched from sheet metal and then ground down. The resistance when cutting is correspondingly high.
